A city-only itinerary through Japan is a good trip with something missing. One or two nights outside is usually all it takes to correct it.
Hakone
The easiest escape from Tokyo: hot springs, a lake, mountain rail and open-air sculpture, all on a loop that works as a single day or a slow overnight.
The Fuji Five Lakes
Closer to the mountain and quieter than Hakone, with lakeside walking and the clearest morning views in winter.
Northern Kyoto
Kurama and Kibune are under an hour from the city centre: cedar forest, a river and a mountain path between two shrines.
The Kiso valley
Post towns on an old highway, connected by a walkable forest trail. A strong addition between Tokyo and Kyoto if you have the days.
