Introduction
Most travellers see Fuji from a train window and leave it at that. Staying a night nearby is a different experience entirely: the mountain appears at dawn, disappears by mid-morning and reshapes the whole day around it.
Two bases do the job. Hakone offers hot springs, art museums and an easy loop from Tokyo. The Fuji Five Lakes region puts you directly beneath the mountain.

Climb, but only in season
The official climbing window is short and the mountain is closed outside it.

How to get around
- Highway buses from Shinjuku reach Kawaguchiko directly and are often faster than the train.
- Hakone is served by a private rail, cable-car and boat loop that works as a day in itself.
- Regional passes can cover the local network — check whether your route is included before buying.
