JR Pass & Trains in Japan

The Japan Rail Pass is a nationwide rail pass for eligible visitors, available for 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days. It covers eligible JR services within its validity period and the conditions of the pass purchased. It is not a ticket for every train or public transport service in Japan.

For foreign visitors, eligibility depends on entering Japan with Temporary Visitor status, not simply on the length of the holiday. Your passport and entry status are checked when you collect or exchange the pass. The pass is personal and cannot be lent to someone else; keep your passport with you when using it. Japanese nationals living abroad have separate requirements and should check the official eligibility conditions before buying.

Coverage includes eligible JR Shinkansen, limited express, express, rapid and local trains, as well as the Tokyo Monorail and BRT. Certain local JR buses and the JR-WEST Miyajima Ferry are included, but JR express buses are not; the Miyajima visitor tax remains separate. Check the service and accommodation class: an Ordinary pass does not give unrestricted access to Green Cars. Nozomi and Mizuho have the additional-ticket rule explained below.

A JR service and a private railway or municipal metro are different networks. Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway, Osaka Metro and Kyoto City Subway are not included merely because you hold a national JR Pass. JR local lines can be covered, while local services operated by other companies generally require their own fare. A JR train using a private railway section can also require a supplement unless an official exception applies. Check the operator and route rather than assuming that all urban trains are included.

You can buy through the official JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation service or obtain an Exchange Order from an authorised overseas agency. The collection process and advance reservation options differ. For an official online purchase, prepare your reservation number and passport; for an agency purchase, take the Exchange Order and passport to a designated exchange office. An order confirmation or Exchange Order alone is not the pass you use to travel. Check the collection location, opening hours and the deadlines applying to your purchase.

Choose the start date for the consecutive travel period and check the dates printed on the issued pass before leaving the counter. Collect the pass before boarding; do not assume your first train journey automatically sets its start date. Once the pass has been issued, its usage period cannot be changed. During validity, use the pass at compatible automatic ticket gates or present it to staff, keep it with you and retain any reserved-seat ticket for your journey.

For a seat included in your pass coverage, making a seat reservation has no additional charge, but a pass alone does not guarantee a seat. After collecting or exchanging it, reserve at a compatible JR ticket machine or ticket office and obtain the reserved-seat ticket. Online reservations before collection are available through JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation only for passes purchased through that official service; an agency Exchange Order does not provide access to that booking facility.

Check the train, carriage, seat and boarding instructions on your reservation. On the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen, a suitcase whose combined dimensions exceed 160 cm but do not exceed 250 cm requires an appropriate oversized-baggage-space reservation. Reserve the suitable seat and space rather than assuming an ordinary seat reservation covers every bag. Confirm the requirements for your actual service before travelling.

The national JR Pass alone does not cover the relevant Nozomi and Mizuho services. To use them, buy an [ONLY WITH JAPAN RAIL PASS] NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket before boarding and use it with a pass valid on the travel date. The additional ticket is specific to the section and accommodation shown; check the options for your Ordinary or Green pass. Do not treat it as a supplement that automatically covers every Nozomi or Mizuho journey.

The JR Pass provides eligible JR travel during a fixed validity period. Suica, PASMO and ICOCA-type IC cards are used for compatible local transport and small everyday payments where accepted. Their stored balance does not itself constitute a Shinkansen ticket or replace a rail pass. Individual tickets may suit a route with fewer long-distance journeys, while a pass may suit other combinations of eligible services within its consecutive-day window. If your trip is concentrated in one area, a regional pass may be more appropriate than the nationwide version. Compare its geographic coverage, included operators, validity rules and your actual journeys before choosing. A regional pass is not automatically cheaper for every route, and its conditions need not match those of the national pass.
