Most of Japan can be decided on the day. A small number of things cannot, and missing them is avoidable with ten minutes of planning before you fly.
1. A ryokan night with dinner
Small inns have few rooms and a kitchen that plans around them. Weekends and autumn go months ahead.
2. One reservation-only restaurant
Counters seating eight take bookings on a fixed schedule, often a month or more in advance and sometimes only through a hotel concierge.
3. Timed-entry museums
Digital art spaces and popular exhibitions release dated slots that disappear quickly in peak season.
4. A craft or tea workshop
The good ones take four to six people. That is the whole reason they are worth doing — and the reason they fill.
5. Long-distance seat reservations
Cheap, quick, and the difference between a calm travel day and standing in a vestibule with a suitcase.
