Osaka's real advantage over Kyoto as a base is the map. Four genuinely different destinations sit within an hour of the centre.
Nara
Under an hour. Tōdai-ji, the deer park and the Naramachi lanes make a full and unhurried day — or a strong half-day if you leave early.
Himeji
Japan's finest surviving castle, visible from the station and about an hour west. Allow three hours on site, more in blossom season.
Kobe
Half an hour away: a port city with hillside views, a distinctive food culture and a very different feel from Osaka.
Kyoto
Possible in a day, but it deserves nights. If Kyoto is a day trip on your itinerary, consider reversing which city you sleep in.
